FAQ’s

What is masonry restoration?
Masonry restoration is any form of masonry work done on an existing structure that does not actually involve the construction stage. It involves repair, replacement, and restoration of bricks on a building that has already been erected.
What is repointing?
Repointing is the renewal of the outer part of the mortar joints in masonry construction. Over time, weathering and decomposition can lead to vacuum formation in joints between masonry elements, typically in bricks, which allows penetration of water.
How much does it cost to tuckpoint brick?
The cost of having a tuck pointed brick wall varies greatly from region to region (and even from zip code to zip code). The average cost of a tuckpointing a brick wall or chimney is £400.

For a free estimate, contact Clifton Hill and Montpelier Builders & Construction.

Should the mason contractor I hire be licensed?
Absolutely yes! Operatives from the stone industry are like all other professionals and should have all the necessary licenses and state certificates that affect their trade.

At Clifton Hill and Montpelier Builders & Constructions, all our craftsmen are properly trained and licensed in the UK to work in their respective fields.

What is the difference between repointing and tuckpointing?
The difference between the two is that one is used to repair structural damage, and the other performs an aesthetic task. During repointing, the structural integrity of mortar joints is restored.
Can I get in trouble for hiring an unlicensed contractor?
It is illegal to knowingly employ an unlicensed contractor. If the state finds out that the contractor working for you is an unlicensed contractor, you may be issued a letter of cessation of activity, which causes delays in construction.
Where is the stone processed?
Thanks to our experienced stonemasons, the entire architectural masonry is cut and finished in our own workshop in Brighton, East Sussex. We do not commission out any of our work.
What type of brick and mortar should be used in fireplace construction?
Only a fire-resistant brick should be used in chimney construction. There is a big difference between fire bricks and normal bricks. Normal bricks are made of clays and slates that are shaped and manufactured to withstand small amounts of heat.

Fire bricks are made of fireclay and other components to withstand large amounts of heat. The material prevents the heat from radiating beyond the area to which it was exposed. Refractory mortar or a specially formulated mixture of mortar and fireclay should be used in the manufacture of the fireplaces.

What are the advantages of stone over other products?
Stones absorb energy more slowly than other products and also release this energy more slowly.

In the case of a house, this means that the heat does not get through the walls as quickly in summer and the heat does not escape so quickly in winter, which reduces the costs for cooling and heating. Stone is also more resistant to many elements and so it does not freeze or heats easily.

Which is better – stone or brick?
Although both materials are long-lasting, stone is better than brick. However, brick is less expensive than stone.
How long does stone veneer last?
Natural stone can last a century or more, especially with occasional maintenance and repairs. Siding made of artificial stone is often supplied with a manufacturer’s warranty that guarantees the quality of the materials under normal conditions, which can range from 20 to 75 years, depending on the product.
Does marble add value to your home?
If you sell your home, you can charge a higher price because of the marble. Because marble is so sought after and attractive, your improvements will likely sell your home faster. And in the meantime, they’ll be some of your favourite features in the house.
Will granite countertops ever go out of style?
The short answer is no. Granite does not become obsolete because it is a 100 percent natural material.
Is quartz better than marble?
Depending on the quality selected, marble tops are more expensive than quartz. However, the labour cost for quartz is higher due to the complicated installation. Therefore, the cost difference is not significant. However, quartz is slightly cheaper.
